Zoysia grass is considered a low maintenance turf that grows nicely in Austin and Central Texas. Its high tolerance to heat and it's ability to effeciently store water makes this type of grass a popular choice for Austin residents. Zoysia grass has a very deep root system, allowing it to grow during drought stress and low rain periods. Zoysia grass can be planted from seed, but the hybrids are sterile; therefore, hybrids must be sodded. This species usually requires between 1 to 3 inches of watering per week if in full sun. Overall, it is relatively free of fungus and common pest problems.
The best time to apply fertilizer is May 1, June 1 and September 1. Most 10-10-10 or 10-6-4 fertilizers will contain soluble sources of nitrogen.
